Rev Janet Foggie, a Pioneer Minister at University of Stirling preached the sermon today Sunday 7th October. Photo attached shows her with another Mrs Foggie -  her Mum and our own Elder Margaret Foggie.

Janet was delighted to preach to her childhood home congregation.  She is one of 5 Pioneer Minsters appointed by the Church of Scotland.  The others are working in a housing estate in Edinburgh,  a drop in addiction centre in Paisley, an art community in Glasgow, and in the agricultural community in Ayr.  Janet is also the Chaplain at the University and one of her many initiatives involves matching up students with local host families to entertain them and welcome them to Stirling, and arranges for local volunteers to take students to churches to join in Worship and meet Stirling residents.

Rev Foggie told us about the woman in the Bible known as Tabatha or Dorcas. She was a Disciple doing good work and helping the poor. She sewed to make clothes.  Janet then referred to the beautiful handmade banner Rev Lydia presented to us earlier in 2018 when she came to see us from Zimbabwe. The point of reference was that it was made by hand, and Dorcas in the Bible made things by hand. We are all capable of doing this to help people in need.

Janet finished her sermon by referring to a Canadian student who came to her own Sewing group at the University. She didn't have a great impression or memory of the Church due to a bad experience in earlier life whilst at boarding school.  But she enjoyed the Sewing group, the friends she made, the chat and fellowship.  But was shocked to learn at the end of the semester that Janet was a "pastor" . Luckily for Janet she must have learnt from the Dorcas story as this students view of Christianity had been revived due to her good experience of the Sewing group.

Today (Sunday 25th February) Lyle Kirk Sunday Worship was a wee bit different. The service, being held at our Union Street campus, kicked off with an introduction to Rev Lydia Neshangwe who is on a visit from our sister church St Andrew's in Bulawayo Zimbabwe. Our Minister Rev Owen Derrick then explained the purpose of "Souper Sunday" - to raise awareness of the Church of Scotland HIV programme to help rid the world of AIDS.

Our Sunday School lead the congregation in the first hymn Welcome Everybody with the inaugural performance of their big band - some future music stars in the making thanks to Ian Armour.

Emilie Adele McCallum then took centre stage with her Baptism.  When the kids had left for Sunday School the sermon took the form of an interview between the two Ministers. Lydia gave us an insight to life in Zimbabwe and let us know that 1 in 10 Zimbabweans is HIV positive (although not all of them have full-blown AIDS).  Lydia finished of with a message of hope, saying that the number of people suffering from AIDS in Zimbabwe has fallen by half since 2013.  This is largely due to the work being done to get the complicated and expensive drug regimen to those most in need, as well as to better education for everyone about prevention.

Lydia and her husband Paul run an international AIDS orphans organisation which seeks to help the children who have been orphaned by HIV/AIDS.

Following the service the baptism party headed off to Cruden Hall and over 80 moved through to the Large Hall for a Soup and Bread lunch with Lydia saying grace. Jessie Crawford and Margaret Foggie made very tasty Lentil Soup and Mushroom Soup - a BIG thanks to them, and to all their helpers not forgetting the back room male staff!!

Young people enjoyed an action-packed week at Lyle Kirk's annual Summer Holiday Club in early August.
The children learnt about the app Scripture Union developed and which can be downloaded free onto mobile devices. Following last year’s theme, Guardians of Ancora brought out Treasure Seekers which helped the children learn stories from the birth of Christ through to his resurrection. Each day the children were told a story and then they had an activity book to answer questions on what they had learnt. The younger children would make a craft at this point like like cupcake sheep or music makers. Each day the children had a quest to do. They had to find a christmas bauble that matched their group colour, they had to find stories or pictures in bibles of shepherds and angels, they were to find hearts that had words written on them from the memory verse and get themselves in the correct order so everyone could read it and then the hearts were broken into pieces and they had to put them back together. Each day the children made a craft relating to the bible story - sheep banks, praying hands, angels, crosses and flower pots. We would finish the morning off with a dance off where the leaders had to show off their best dance moves for the children to choose a winner. Everyone loved the dance to our theme tune “Guardians of Ancora”. Jessie kept us fed and watered as usual. Wednesday evening was the BBQ, with a fantastic turnout of family & friends who all joined in with the singing, dancing and family challenge. Holiday Club leader, Pam Stewart: "We had 70 children registered this year which is a new record! It is a great opportunity for children starting Primary 1 as they get to meet others joining with them.” She continued "Why Am I Still Doing This? Watching the children having great fun answers my question. And to top the week off, we had a cafe style celebration at Sunday Worship when the children performed songs & dances, and we all shared joy & fellowship. Our children learnt about the bible in a modern way which was great.” A special thanks goes to Katie Howlett - who definitely made Pam's life easier. For more information on what's on offer for Children & Youth at Lyle Kirk, contact Pam Stewart on tel: 01475 710158, or email: pamela.stewart3@ntlworld.com, or go to the Lyle Kirk Messy Church page on www.lylekirk.org and you can link to their Facebook.

"Cheryl Boyle Rolph from USA arrived in Scotland to walk in the footsteps of her ancestors, one of whom was baptised in the Old West Kirk on the 15th January 1809 when it was situated in it's original site on the shore. Cheryl and her friend Margaret were met at the Esplanade site by a small group who were able to show her round and tell her about the history of the church. Her Grandfather Andrew Hill (pictured with his wife) emigrated to America in 1882 but it was his grandfather, also named Andrew Hill, who was baptised in the Old West.
Cheryl was fascinated to hear the old stories and took very many photographs of the church which she can add to her collection gathered during her Scottish Pilgrimage.
Cheryl left a Connecticut quarter dollar with us which had been minted in 1999 and the reverse features an Oak tree, an integral part of Connecticut's heritage and existence. How appropriate when her journey had taken her to the Wellpark Mid Kirk, Greenock where she enjoyed morning worship, the entrance to this building originally overlooking where Greenock's famous Oak tree once stood."

Lyle Kirk came together on Sunday 28th February to support the Church of Scotland HIV programme "Changing the world one spoonful at a time". The service was led by members of the congregation and then we were treated to a simple lunch of soup and bread. Those present were then invited to make a donation to the HIV programme.

Thank-you to all those who were involved in running the service and helping with the lunch, and a special BIG thank you to Margaret Foggie who organised the whole event and made the Mushroom soup, and Liz Howlett who made the Lentil soup. Anyone for seconds....

Love Always Wins. Yes that was the message from the Youth Service on Sunday 21st February 2016 at Lyle Kirk.  It was great to see so many young people in church - they came from the ATC (Air Training Corps), Boys Brigade, Scouts, Guides, Brownies, Cubs, Beavers and of course our own Sunday School. We all had fun with the balloons - what a new experience for our congregation! And at the end of the service we all watched the ATC hold their passing out parade for new cadets. The parents all looked so proud, and the celebration cake was very tasty... See you all soon!
